2026 Queensland Bridge Competition Results

The Engineering Link Group (TELG) is delighted to announce the results of the 2026 Queensland Bridge Competition, another outstanding year of student innovation, creativity and engineering excellence across Queensland.

This year, students from 26 schools across Queensland designed, constructed and tested 158 spaghetti bridges, making 2026 one of the largest competitions in the event’s history.

From Townsville to the Gold Coast, and from the Sunshine Coast to Rockhampton, students applied engineering principles, problem-solving skills and countless hours of teamwork to create structures capable of carrying extraordinary loads.

These remarkable designs demonstrated an exceptional understanding of structural efficiency, materials, load distribution and bridge design. The winning bridge successfully supported almost 42 kilograms, an extraordinary achievement for a structure constructed primarily from spaghetti.

Competition Highlights

Welcoming New Schools

Six schools joined the Queensland Bridge Competition for the first time in 2026:

• Hillcrest Christian College
• Kelvin Grove State College
• Narangba Valley SHS
• Shalom College Bundaberg
• Suncoast Christian College
• Toowong State School

Since 2020, the competition has engaged students from 68 different schools, with more than 610 bridges tested.

This remarkable participation reflects the growing enthusiasm for engineering and STEM education throughout Queensland.

This year’s competition was conducted across a network of testing locations at QUT Gardens Point, The Lakes College, St Eugene College, Townsville State High School, Hillcrest Christian College, Marsden State High School, Heights College and Suncoast Christian College.

By bringing testing opportunities to metropolitan and regional communities, TELG continues to make authentic engineering experiences accessible to students across Queensland.

Real Engineering in Action

The Queensland Bridge Competition challenges students to apply mathematics, science and engineering principles to a genuine design problem. Teams must create a bridge that meets strict specifications before testing it to destruction under increasingly heavy loads.

The process mirrors the work undertaken by engineers, requiring creativity, resilience, collaboration and evidence-based decision-making. It gives students the opportunity to experience the engineering design cycle, evaluate their work under authentic conditions and learn from both success and failure.

Every bridge tested contributes to a deeper understanding of structural design and engineering thinking.
